You
know the drill ... Youve been looking for freelancing work
for weeks, maybe even months, and theres nothing for you
out there. Youd be willing to write about anything ... toads,
snails, even the reproductive habits of alligators, but nothing
has come your way. E-mails go unanswered, and you are left wondering
... is this really the life I want? Short answer, yes! Long answer,
lets take a look ...
How
do you feel when you write? Do you try to find ways to write throughout
the day? Do you look forward to your writing time, or do you try
to postpone it? The answers to these questions may tell you what
you should be doing. If
writing isnt for you, what does make you happy? How could
you get paid for it?
After
deciding what you want to do, take a look at your resume, your
cover letter, and the way you present yourself in interviews.
Is your resume crisp, clean and to the point? Remember, it should
be a summary, not a book. Does your cover letter clearly explain
your goals and personality? Do you answer interview questions
clearly and completely without picking your nose or fidgeting?
Do you anticipate questions, like I see you have a nine-month
gap in your employment history. Would you like to explain that?
Do you have a ready answer that sounds great? Do you have the
right answers to standard interview questions? Are you neatly
groomed, and is your zipper zipped? (You may laugh, but I actually
read a story of a person who had his zipper unzipped during a
job interview. He didnt get the job. Its the little
things ....)
