When starting out as a freelance writer, you probably want lots
of exposure for your writing, but how do you do it? You might
consider working for free, and offering your services to web sites
you admire. Just click on the Contact Us link or the Write for
Us link, and e-mail a short note explaining your experience, and
including links to online clips. If you don't have online clips,
paste a short article in the body of the e-mail. This process
only takes a few minutes, and you never know what might result.
Other options for displaying your work for free are the following
web sites:
http://www.stories.com
-- Free registration includes your own online portfolio
and e-mail service, and a chance to bond with other writers. You
can add several types of work to your portfolio, including static
items (articles or stories), book reviews, and journal entries
(which can be public or private). When you create an item, you
rate it (G, PG, PG-13, R, or NC-17). Then people can view your
item on the web site, and rate it on a system of five stars (five
being the best). The site also has writing classifieds, which
include listings for contests, events, conferences and jobs. A
Frequently Asked Questions feature can help you with any problems.
However, if you don't get your question answered, Stories.com
representatives usually respond to questions within three days.
Stories.com doesn't pay for work contributed to its site, but
also doesn't retain any rights to the work.
http://www.ezine.com --
This web site is an electronic magazine that publishes articles
on connecting businesses to the Internet, and using Microsoft
Windows NT in a routed networking environment. The information
on the web site doesn't indicate whether pay is available for
accepted articles. However, needless to say, extensive experience
in the above fields is needed to have an article accepted for
publication.
http://www.sagebase.com
-- Click on the Be a Sage icon on this web site, and follow the
application instructions. When accepted, you can submit articles
to the web site, which focuses on many topics, including family,
health, pets, and money. Articles are sorted according to category,
and which sage or writer wrote them. Web site instructions indicate
that writers will earn 50 percent of any revenue the web site
generates through banners or articles on the page the writers
article is placed. However, be cautious. I wrote 13 articles for
http://www.sagebase.com
in the years 2000 and 2001. All of the articles are still displayed
on the site, but I haven't received any money, and I have contacted
the SageBase editor several times.
